Crocodiles await generous - or careless - tourists.

Item ID: 4013

The Tárcoles River empties into the sea south of Puntarenas near Jaco. Just inland of the coast the main road crosses on a bridge about 50 feet above the water. About two dozen crocs occupy a small island in mid-channel and cruise the waters waiting for residents and tourists to throw food (officially not permitted). According to the locals, people toss them anything from leftovers to live chickens.

Some of these guys are a good ten feet long or more and over a yard across. My guess is that they don't live on refuse alone. Along the stream are ranches with many Zebu cattle, or as the crocs might call them, "lunch."
